Martin Macias

Martin is one of the many heroes in our community.  I had the chance to interview him and that let me get to know him a little.  He has wavy, brown hair, and he is light skinned.  He was very nice and friendly.  He cares for everyone in his community, especially the people who are less fortunate than others.
Martin works for a radio station called Radio Active.  What he does there is get people from the community to talk about what they do and issues they face.  He also works for a place called Chicago Fair Trade. When he works there, he goes around to schools and other places and talks to them about who makes things and where they are from. People are working on things called labor rights.
Aside from the community, Martin is a very caring and dedicated person.  When he was younger, his mom had gotten very sick. When they had found out that is was because of the food she was eating, she changed her diet. To help her out, his whole family had changed their diet too. So he went around in his community and asked at his school and neighborhood why they were getting sick. That’s what inspired him.
An interesting thing that has happened to him while working in the community was that he got to travel to places he never thought he would.  A huge skill is to talk to others because it isn’t easy. He told us, “Talking to your friends on the phone is different from just talking in front of someone who you don’t know.”  He defines a community as people who stay together. Some changes he would like to see in our world and community would be to have less processed foods.  One obstacle he has over come in his life was his health because he was always sick and his confidence because he got overwhelmed easily.
In my opinion, I think that Martin is a hero. He is a hero in many ways. One way he is a hero is when his mom was sick because the food she ate, he had changed his diet to help her out. He didn’t have to do it, but he did it to help her. Not many people would do that.

  1. I also interviewed Martin and he is very much a hero because he said that hot chips need to be taken off the shelf because theyre not healthy. That shows me he wants the best for our community. - De'Ana
