Maria Marquez

Maria Marquez is one of the members in our community. Not only is she a

member of our community, she is also hero in our community. I interviewed Maria and

really got to know her, her story, and what she does in the community. She is Latina and

has long hair. She is very mellow, caring, and motherly.

Maria is a Parent Mentor Coordinator at Ames Middle School. She realized that

her son needed more help than other students. She teaches students in a different way

than other teachers do. She makes the older kids in charge of the younger children so they

can be involved. She said, “One of the students came back to me and said thank you

because he learned so much.” She’s also involved in Coffee and Conversations every

other Friday. She said, “Coffee and Conversations is a way for parents to discuss issues

they have with Ames middle school that they think is wrong or right.”

Maria is a very caring woman. She wants the best for the community and tries to

eliminate the bad issues people have. She also seems very calm and makes sure her point

gets across to everyone. She cares a lot for her son which is the reason why she works

with the community today.

To me, Maria is very much a hero. She makes sure that children get their

education and has a good way to encourage kids to want to learn. Without teachers like

Maria, kids would not learn as much. With these strategies kids can be much more

successful in the future. So I thank God for people in our community like Maria

Marquez.
