Elena Hernandez

Community Hero Narrative
For the community hero project interview one of the heroes I interviewed was name was Elena. She was a very nice young lady between her late 20’s and early 30’s.  I think she’s an extremely good help out to the community and a sweet person. She also had very good physical characteristic. She is white Caucasian with curly brown hair.
Elena use to be an organizer for affordable housing. She now works at Logan Square Neighborhood (LSNA) with Juliet as a community organizer. She works with youth in education. Elena has been working in the community for about 5 ½ years. She also works with VOYCE at Kelvyn Park, which is an organization to prevent the high school drop out rate.
Elena is very kind and dedicated to the work she does. She is not a normal hero like a super hero. She is a normal person that does hero things. However she has goals in her life to accomplish as well as help the community. Her number one goal is to go back to school and get her master’s degree. She thinks the best part of Logan Square community is that it is a very diverse but also a very active community. She says, “I would tell you to get involved and I will tell you to believe in yourself.” Elena moved from Michigan to Chicago. She also had to support herself in college.
Elena doesn’t really have a hero right now in her life. However, she said young people inspire her and people she works with at KP are inspirational to her and the young people who are trying to make themselves a better person. Her hero when she was younger was shera. She defines hero as someone who is strong and know who they are, also people who positively use what they have to help out others. What makes Elena a hero in my eyes is that she is a very successful person and she helps out young people such as me. She says “Kelvyn Park is a school community with the students and teachers, but people who live, work, shop, go to church and come together on a daily basis sort of define what a community is.”
