Cheryl Graves

Community heroes
Cheryl Graves comes off as a very respectful, open-minded and comfortable to be around type of woman. She loves being able to meet new people and learn new things about them. At our interview we had sat in a circle and went around sharing something or a few things about ourselves just so everyone is more comfortable with each other, and also so we each learn something about one another.
Cheryl is known as a community hero. She told us that she wanted to help people find their power, because “people, and young people think they don’t have power.” She also said that since people think that they don’t have power, it inspires her to do the work she does, in and around her community.
Cheryl is a very kind person. During our interview she told us a story. She told us how sometimes she picks flowers, flowers that smell of lavender and just hands it to someone that walks by. Cheryl explains the look on some of the peoples faces, she just tells them to smell, and they seem to enjoy the beautiful smell that comes from the flower.
In my eyes Cheryl is a hero because “she tries to try” like one on my old friends always said “try to try.” This is something anyone can do, but not many choose to, since Cheryl chooses to try. To try and help make something better that makes her a hero. You have to start somewhere why not with trying?
When we asked Cheryl how she would define community. Her response was, “Geographically because I think people need to recognize the power they have to change their own neighborhood.” Cheryl told us during the interview that, “We need to create things that don’t exist to solve things that do exist.”
